A new intergenerational play space is coming to Kings Park

We are designing a new intergenerational play space at Kings Park in Upper Ferntree Gully. The new play space is a key initiative of the Kings Park Masterplan.

During previous community consultation in 2022 and 2023, we heard that you want a bigger and better play space that supports play and activities for people of all ages and is better connected to the nearby facilities. Based on your feedback, we have developed a draft play space concept design.

Location

The play space will be relocated to a new location on site at Kings Park which is closer to the sporting facilities, shared path, Coonara Community House and carpark. The new location also benefits from natural shade provided by existing mature trees.

The location of the play zones in the concept design has been designed around a flood swale which runs through the new location.

Play zones

A new basketball half court and picnic area are already planned for construction and will be completed by mid 2026.

We'd like your feedback on the draft design for the remaining play zones:

  • Scooter track for children aged 3 to 10 years old
  • Nature play zone and slide for children aged 1 to 10 years old
  • Climbing forest play zone for young people aged 10 to 25 years old
  • Indigenous grass fields and art walk for adults and older people.

How do these zones reflect how you would like to use the space? Have your say on the draft play space concept design by 11.55pm on Sunday 24 May 2026.

Engagement plan summary

Finalise the design for a new intergenerational play space as part of the Kings Park masterplan implementation that balances the community’s preferences with the need for multi-age play opportunities, safety, and available budget.

Community feedback will play a key role in confirming which playground features and design elements are most valued as we refine the concept plan.

Feedback is sought from people who use the play space regularly, including local families with children, sporting clubs and members and young people.

For this project we will be engaging our community at the level of Consult on the International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) Spectrum. This means we will listen to what you say and consider it when we make a decision.
