Help develop our waste strategy and design future waste services and education programs.
You've already told us that reducing our environmental impact is important and this is one of the key directions in our Council and Community Plan (2021-2031). The state government also requires us to change some of our services, with targets to reduce waste and divert as much from landfill.
Knox collects over 70,000 tonnes of waste each year through our household, hard rubbish, business, and public litter collection. We also deliver a range of education programs to help our community reduce waste and recycle correctly.
We're already making some changes, with the new food and garden bin service coming in 2023.
We want your feedback on how you use our waste services now and what is most important to you in planning for the future.
We also want to know how you feel about the new food and garden bin service and the changes to the frequency of rubbish bin collection.
You can share your feedback through our survey or come along to a pop-up session. If you would prefer a printed survey we can mail one out to you.
Currently, 55% of the rubbish from Knox ends up in landfill. Some councils have reduced this to 24% by making changes to their waste services.
Food makes up 43% of what’s in our rubbish bins and is sent to landfill. From mid-next year you will be able to put food scraps in your garden waste bin.
At the same time, we’ll change how often we pick up your bins. The food and garden bin, with most of the stinky stuff, will be picked up weekly and the rubbish bin will be picked up fortnightly.
If you live in a large household or have specific waste needs such as children in nappies, people using incontinence aids, and households with large amounts of medical waste we want to understand what extra support and service options you may need.
Register to attend a focus group to work with us to design a service that meets your needs and how we can best support you with the changes. You can also share your feedback through the survey or at one of the pop ups.
