A dementia-friendly community is a place where people living with dementia are supported to live a high quality of life with purpose and value.
Over 400,000 people are estimated to be living with dementia in Australia. In 2016, we had 2,626 people living in Knox with dementia and it is estimated that by 2050 there will be over 12,700 people.
To better support people living with dementia in the community, we are partnering with Dementia Australia to implement the Dementia-Friendly Communities program. The program aims to build awareness, understanding and acceptance of dementia, so that people living with dementia can participate and remain active in the community.
This program, combined with the results from this survey and small group discussions, will inform the development of Council’s Dementia-friendly Action Plan.
