We seek your feedback on our proposal to sell Council property, 566R Boronia Rd, Wantirna, which has been declared as surplus. Your feedback will help guide Council's decision.

Council declared this vacant land as surplus at the December 2023 Council meeting.

The land includes a small tree reserve at the street frontage (approximately 181m2). Our proposal involves subdividing the land, in order for Council to retain and protect the reserve.

The remaining land (approximately 847 m2) is being proposed for sale. Proceeds from the potential sale, would be allocated to Council’s Open Space Reserve, and support future acquisition of land for open space or support initiatives to improve existing open space.

We are undertaking a statutory process and seek community feedback on this proposal in accordance with the Local Government Act 2020.

Map. Proposed subdivision of vacant land 566R Boronia Rd, Wantirna.

The tree reserve proposed for subdivision and protection (181m2)

The tree reserve runs parallel to Boronia Rd from the parcel. We are proposing to protect this area to maintain canopy tree coverage along the street and pedestrian pathway, and provide opportunity for future beautification and tree planting.

Protecting the tree reserve will preserve 9 trees: one high retention tree, 4 medium retention trees, and 4 low retention trees.

The vacant land proposed for sale (847m2)

We have assessed the property thoroughly before we declared it as surplus. The vacant land is observed as mostly unused by the public due to its shape and through access, and therefore does not provide good active space and recreational outcomes for the community. When compared with Council’s other open space areas, this land ranks lower in biodiversity benefits.

The draft survey and subdivision pictured above (and attached) shows the proposed subdivision (in draft), with the land running parallel to Boronia Rd proposed to be subdivided from the main parcel and retained by Council.

Next steps

After community consultation has closed, Council will consider all submissions when making the decision at a future Council meeting.

If the decision is to sell the property, the property will be listed for sale and go through a public auction process.
