What are transport assets?

We manage $1.1 billion transport assets for the community, including local roads, paths, shared trails, bridges and carparks.

People use our transport assets to move around our city, whether that's on foot, bike, car or public transport.

  • Local roads

We manage 730kms of local roads.

  • Paths

We manage 1,456kms of paths including footpaths and shared trails.

  • Structures

We manage 108 structures including bridges.

  • Carparks

    We manage 252 carparks.

Major arterial roads

The maintenance of major arterial roads in Knox is the responsibility of Vic Roads. Find out more.

Have your say on how we manage transport assets

We are developing a new Transport Asset Management Plan that will guide how our existing transport assets are cared for, maintained and renewed over time.

Share your commuting experience to help shape how we manage our local roads, paths, carparks and bridges.

Have your say by midnight on Sunday 15 March 2026.

Your feedback will:

  • give us insight into what it is like to commute around Knox in various ways, including by foot, bike, car and public transport
  • help us to prioritise transport assets for delivery and maintenance
  • help us identify improvement opportunities and service gaps.

We will consider your feedback when creating the draft Transport Asset Management Plan.

  • Community feedback - through this consultation and on the draft plan.
  • Legislation - the plan must be in line with current legislation including the Road Management Act.
  • The final endorsement of the Transport Asset Management Plan will be by Council in a public meeting.
  • Commuters.
  • Local business owners.
  • People who have experienced special needs and their carers.

This means we will listen to what you say and consider it when we make a decision.

  • Council priorities for discretionary funding and service levels in delivery and maintenance of transport Assets. (i.e. which locations need improvements, what issues are most important to fix, etc)
  • Opportunities and guidance that would inform future deliberations on service levels for transport asset categories (Council’s Road Management Plan).
  • Opportunities for Council to explore to make the network more accessible.
  • Opportunities identified by the community for Council to explore/improve safety improvements.
    • The budget for the application of the plan, this is done via Council’s budget process.
    • Non-discretionary expenditure required by legislation.
    • Adherence to minimum standards and requirements such as Council's legal obligations, safety requirements, engineering standards etc.
    • The standards to which non- Council managed roads are maintained or provided to.
    • Total funding available for managing Council's transport asset networks. This includes the timing of external grants and asset renewal obligations under financial sustainability requirements.
