Have your say on the proposed Mountain Highway footpath

We are exploring the feasibility of constructing a new footpath on Mountain Highway between Wicks Road and Claremont Avenue in The Basin.

The proposed footpath would improve access to local shops and public transport, while making the area safer for pedestrians, cyclists and road users.

The project would involve the construction of a 1.5 metre wide path on the road reserve on the east side of Mountain Highway.

If the footpath is to proceed, there would be challenges with construction due to the steep terrain in the area. It would require potential reconstruction of driveways and crossovers in the road reserve.

Previous consultation with the wider community indicated overall support for the improvement.

Now we want to speak with directly impacted landowners about the proposal and get their feedback on a proposed design for in front of their property.

Consultation with directly impacted landowners is open until 30 June 2026.

Engagement summary

Council will decide whether to proceed with the construction of the footpath.

Council will consider:

  • The need for safe access in the area
  • Feasibility findings
  • Community feedback
  • Impacts to landowners
  • Project costs
  • Available funding.

At this stage we are seeking feedback from landowners on Mountain Highway and Clevedon Road who will be directly impacted by the proposed footpath.

For this project we will be engaging our community at the level of Consult on the International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) Spectrum. This means we will listen to what you say and consider it when we make a decision.

Impacted landowners can:

  • Provide feedback to improve the draft concept design for the footpath, which will be considered in developing the detailed designed.
  • Provide feedback in support for or against the design generally.
  • Share localised knowledge regarding potential issues, concerns or site-specific context relating to individual properties.
  • Location and width of the footpath. It is not possible to make the footpath narrower or wider.
  • Removal of illegal structures in the road reserve, should it be decided that construction of the footpath proceed.
  • Safety requirements for the footpath, including retaining walls and other associated safety features.
