Have your say on our proposed plan to improve and manage the gardens

We have developed a Horticultural and Landscape Plan to guide how we improve and manage the gardens at Miller's Homestead from now and into the future.

Have we got it right?

About Miller's Homestead

Miller's Homestead is a single storey Victorian residence on the corner of Melrose Court and Dorrigo Drive in Boronia that dates back to 1888.

The gardens at the site are a valued green space within the community, supporting cultural activities, library services, and offering a unique area for relaxation and recreation. They are also home to historical features including a magnificent Waterhousia floribunda specimen and Camelias dating back to the early days of the homestead.

What's proposed?

Through the proposed plan, gardens would be improved to enhance amenity, make them easier to maintain and reduce weedy species on the site.

The 10-year plan would aim to preserve the historical integrity of the gardens whilst providing an improved, usable space for the community to enjoy.

Proposed restoration works would commence from early 2026 and include:

Engagement Plan Summary

We will consider community feedback received during the plan’s exhibition, ensuring it informs future site improvements while balancing community needs and preserving the heritage of this iconic part of Boronia.

In finalising the plan, we will consider aspects of it that could be clearer aswell as ideas to strengthen it.

  • Nearby residents
  • Tenants at the site and library staff
  • Library users
  • Knox Historical Society

For this project we will be engaging our community at the level of Consult on the International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) Spectrum.
This means we will listen to what you say and consider it when we make a decision.

  • Plant selection (from a pre-approved list of suitable species).
  • Timing of planting refreshes (when tired plantings are replaced).
  • Designs for garden beds and lawns (including plant choices for different areas).
  • Maintenance strategies, such as mulch use and plant section to reduce upkeep.
  • Minor changes within the existing garden footprint, that enhance the space without altering its core structure.
  • Removal of environmental weeds (a required ongoing activity).
  • Paths, layout, access and built infrastructure, unless directly affecting horticultural management.
  • Final decision on the Plan, including any changes made before it is finalised.
  • Capital works budgeting and weather-related constraints.
  • Major changes beyond the current garden footprint, such as structural alterations or expansions.
