Phase 2 - February to March 2026 CLOSED
Community engagement closed Tuesday 17 March 2026
We've created a draft concept plan to replace the wooden fort at Marie Wallace Playground, based on what you told us matters most.
Now it's your turn to review the draft plan and tell us what you think. Help us make the playground fun, safe and accessible for all children.
Read the Community Engagement Summary Report from Phase 1
Based on your ideas, we have created a draft plan that reflects local character, supports children of all abilities, keeps the spirit of adventure and imagination, and improves shade, seating and comfort, while also exploring opportunities for water and sensory play.
The draft plan also includes:
- Active play options
- Water and sensory play options
- Accessibility and support features
Explore the proposed features on the interactive map below or download the design from our document library.
- Continuous accessible elevated ramp as the primary route through the play structure.
- Ramp designed to be DDA‑compliant (Disability Discrimination Act), including appropriate gradients and rest platforms.
- Inclusive sensory play elements integrated along the ramp path (e.g., tactile panels, musical features, Indigenous‑inspired eel-pattern boards).
- Play opportunities at multiple levels, allowing participation from children with diverse abilities.
- Low‑level play elements (climbing, agility, swing-style activities) to avoid inaccessible areas.
- Design encourages social and inclusive play, ensuring children of varying ages and abilities can interact together.

Phase 1 - November to December 2025
Project background
The playground at Marie Wallace Reserve has been a favourite destination for families for 25 years, but the much-loved wooden fort no longer meets modern safety and accessibility standards.
It's time for a renewal to ensure the play area meets current playground requirements and continues to provide to provide inclusive, imaginative play opportunities for everyone.
Phase 1 Engagement overview
During the first phase of community engagement, we wanted to hear what you love about the existing large timber play fort and what you think could make play fun and engaging in a new replacement play structure.
We sought your thoughts about the features you’d like to keep or what you thought should be included. Would you like more climbing challenges or spaces for imaginative games? Your ideas will help shape a playground that reflects what matters most to you.

- Gather community input on the specific equipment and play features in the concept.
- Check that the concept supports people of all abilities and identify ways to improve accessibility.
- Build community trust and ownership by clearly explaining what’s included in this engagement and what happens next.

Feedback is sought from:
- Playground users
- Local families with children
- Youth / teenagers
- People with a disability and carers
- Seniors / local residents
- Clubs based at Bayswater Marie Wallace

- The specific types of play equipment included, especially items that support inclusiveness and accessibility.
- How the surrounding space (outside the play structure but within the site) can be used for other activities or features.
- The need to replace old equipment to meet Australian playground safety standards.
- Site boundaries, infrastructure constraints and planning/engineering compliance.
- Budget limits and available funding.
- Project timelines and Council delivery commitments.
