Help shape the future direction of Ferntree Gully Cemetery

We are inviting your thoughts on proposed improvement opportunities identified in the draft Ferntree Gully Cemetery Masterplan.

The draft Masterplan aims to meet community needs and fulfill our ongoing obligation to manage the cemetery into the future. It was developed following community engagement at the end of 2024, where we received a total of 131 submissions.

Your feedback will help us finalise the Masterplan. This is your opportunity to share your views on the proposed opportunities, including what you like and don't like.

Proposed improvement opportunities include:

  • redesigning areas to create more memorial options, this includes the fountain area, and garden beds
  • reducing the width of some paths to 2.4m, to extend garden bed memorials
  • create a new entrance to improve access and increase visitation to the cemetery

About Ferntree Gully Cemetery

The Ferntree Gully Cemetery was established in 1873 on 5 acres of Crown land. Knox Council took over responsibility as a Trustee of the cemetery in 1982 to manage cemetery operations.

The cemetery is at full capacity with a limited number of ashes positions remaining for purchase. In response to community demand, the Masterplan will provide for more ashes interment options and other meaningful opportunities for memorialisation.

    Engagement Plan

Council, as Trustee for Ferntree Gully Cemetery, is developing a Masterplan to set the strategic direction for the cemetery and provide a framework for planning and delivery of future ashes interment and memorialisation opportunities.

In finalising the masterplan, Council will consider:

    • Feedback from the first round of community engagement, held in November 2024
    • Further feedback received from the community
    • Community need
    • Regulatory requirements to maintain the Cemetery

    Feedback is sought from:

    • Customers
    • Family and friends of deceased
    • Visitors to the Cemetery
    • Local residents
    • Local businesses
    • Broader Knox community

For this project we will be engaging our community at the level of Consult on the International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) Spectrum. This means we will listen to what you say and consider it when we make a decision.

Have your say on proposed opportunities to enhance the cemetery including:

    • Redesigning areas such as the fountain and garden beds to allow for a greater variety of memorial options
    • Introducing additional memorial types to reflect the diverse needs of the community
    • Improving existing features and incorporating new elements to enhance the overall landscape and visitor experience

Doing nothing is not an option – this plan responds to evolving needs and preserves the cemetery’s character for generations to come.

Additionally, the masterplan will not change:

    • The land size of the cemetery. Due to the cemetery’s fixed land size, there is no opportunity to develop more burial positions.
    • The current land zoning or planning controls. The land is zoned for public use and has the planning controls to protect the vegetation and heritage land and restrict development.
