Volunteers and community members have made extraordinary contributions that are impactful and long-lasting in our community. Their achievements are wide-ranging, and include cultural, social and environmental initiatives.

We are approached from time to time, to help remember the work of these inspiring people by creating a memorial in a Council reserve, or installing a commemorative plaque or artwork on a Council owned building.

We have developed a draft Policy, to help ensure we are fair and consistent when evaluating the memorial requests we receive.

Your feedback is invited on the draft Policy to help shape our framework for remembering outstanding locals.

About the draft Commemorative plaques and Memorials Policy

The draft Policy covers the criteria for nominations, type of memorials, duration memorials are displayed, and assessment framework.

When assessing a nomination for an individual, the draft Policy proposes to consider the following:

• their long-term contribution made to the Knox community
• level of community support for the memorial
• their character and standing in the community
• connection between the nominee and location

In addition to nominating individuals, community members can also nominate significant historical or cultural events in Knox for commemoration.

For all memorial nominations, Council will consider the number of existing memorials, public artwork, and other objects in the requested location when assessing requests.
