Help shape a safer shared path through Ferntree Gully
The Ringwood to Belgrave Railway Trail is a popular shared walking and cycling path that spans 17 kilometres across Knox, Maroondah and Yarra Ranges.
Currently there is a gap in the trail around Ferntree Gully Train Station.
We have heard
from the community that the missing link is a safety concern and makes it
difficult to move through the area, so
we’re looking at ways to connect the trail.
Fixing the link will improve safety, connectivity and accessibility and provide an uninterrupted pedestrian and cycling route through Ferntree Gully.
Have your say by midnight on Tuesday 16 December 2025.
Your feedback will be included in our proposal to Vic Track and Metro Trains Melbourne, who own and manage the land and railway station infrastructure.
Route options
We have developed 3 initial ideas to connect the trail. Let us know which one you prefer and why.
Option 1 (blue)
This option proposes:
A new off-road shared path between Lane Road and Alpine Street, on the west side of the station.
The path would be separated from vehicle traffic.
This option is likely to have a higher cost compared to the other two options as it is a longer path. Also, the street lighting on this side of the station is limited which could create safety concerns.
Option 2 (orange)
This option proposes:
A mostly on-road shared path through the train station car park and behind Wattle Hall on the east side of the station.
This path option is shared with vehicle traffic.
To build this option, we would need to remove approximately 6 car parking spots from the middle of the carpark.
Option 3 (purple)
This option proposes:
A mostly off-road shared path around the train station car park and shops, on the east side of the train station.
The path is mostly separated from vehicle traffic.
To build this option, we would need to make changes to the carpark to make space for the new path. We would need to narrow the aisle of the east side of carpark and make it one-way. It is also possible that we may need to remove some informal parking spaces.
